General: Santiago is the largest and most important of the Cape Verde Islands. It measures 991 km² and has 274,044 inhabitants. The Cape Verdean capital Praia, the capital of the archipelago, is located on this island.

Landscape: Santiago is said to be very similar to Africa, due to mountainous area and green valleys. Banana plantations are located on the east coast. The island is of volcanic origin. The highest mountain is the Pico da Antónia (1394 m). The mountainous center of the island is relatively precipitous and therefore the most fertile area in the archipelago.

Tourism: In the city of Praia the center of the city and the Mercado are a sight. Cidade Velha has many houses and other buildings from the 16th century and belongs to the cultural world heritage. At Tarrafal, in the north of the island, there is a beautiful beach. Beautiful hiking tours through the mountains can be made around Rui Vaz
