The most important party of the year is carnival.
The carnival is held three days prior to Ash Wednesday. After Sao Vicente, Sao Nicolau is the second largest carnival to celebrate at Cape Verde, accompanied by big parade cars, exuberant outfits, lots of color, dance and lots of music.
Looking for a place to stay during carnaval perhaps check out Pensão Jardim.
The popular Pensão Jardim has been our first choice of accommodation in Ribeira Brava for many years now and is just a few minutes’ walk the town’s main square. The family establishment is run by Dona Va, her husband and daughter who speak French fluently and a little English and Dutch. They are very welcoming and efficient and bring some old-world character and quirkiness to their pensão.
Those with limited mobility may find Jardim difficult to access, as it is uphill, with an entrance up a steep, narrow alleyway.
The pensão has a total of ten rooms, each of which has a private bathroom with hot water. They are comfortable and simply furnished, air conditioned and equipped with television. Some rooms have interconnecting doors, making them suitable for families. For guests who prefer the option of self-catering, there are two mini-apartments with kitchenettes.
Breakfast is served in the enclosed top-floor restaurant, where pre-ordered lunch or dinner can also be taken.
